Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge invites adults to volunteer for a trail maintenance project at Doeskin Ranch.

We ntrail_build_photo1.gifeed folks over 18 years old able to use hand tools to perform general trail maintenance, remove vegetation, and construct some rock work.  The Central Texas Trail Tamers will supervise and instruct volunteers what to do and how to use the tools.

A free BBQ lunch is provided.  Some water and drinks will be available.  However you should bring your own drinking containers.  Also, be sure to bring your sun block, sturdy outdoor foot wear and a hat!

To get to Doeskin Ranch from FM 1431 go west from Lago Vista and turn right on RR 1174.  Go about 4.5 and turn right into the Doeskin Ranch parking lot.  If coming from Marble Falls, take FM 1431 eastward.  Turn left on RR 1174 and drive about 4.5 miles.  Turn right into the Doeskin Ranch parking lot.

Please call Rob Iski at (512) 339-9432 x 70 by September 18 if you would like to volunteer.  By calling in advance, we will know how much food and drink to buy for the free BBQ lunch.

Field TripsCo-sponsored by TAS and Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR

Led by Deb and Lee Wallace, our fall quarterly field trip to the Refuge will take participants to Doeskin Ranch, one of the publicly-accessible tracts of the refuge. This field trip will cover lowland riparian habitat to hilltop meadows habitat and everything in-between. If you have never been to the Refuge, this will be an excellent introduction to an area of the Refuge that you can visit on your own at any time.

Participants will meet at The Container Store at US 183 and Capital of Texas Hwy at  6:20 am and then carpool to Doeskin Ranch from there.

The Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR will have lunch available for you to purchase afterwards for a donation of $10 at the Flying X Ranch where participants can enjoy a recap of the field trip.

We expect to be driving back to the Container Store no later than 1:00. Registration required. contact Laurie, lauriefoss@flywayadventures.com or 751-3677, for more details.

There’s no birding event like it. Compete with teams throughout the country to see how many species you can count in a 17-foot diameter circle of your choosing within a 24-hour period – while sitting and relaxing!

The official Balcones Canyonlands NWR circle will be at Doeskin Ranch, so drop by and join us when you can for the biggest tail-gate party in birding. This will be the inaugural year for this event and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

The Big Sit! is an annual, international birding event hosted by Bird Watcher's Digest and founded by the New Haven (CT) Bird Club. The Big Sit! is sponsored by Swarovski Optik and Eagle Optics.

Some people have called it a "tailgate party for birders." Today there are Big Sit! circles all over the world, including Guatemala, India, the Netherlands, England, Vietnam, and New Zealand.

The simplicity of the concept makes The Big Sit! so appealing. Find a good spot for bird watching -- preferably one with good views of a variety of habitats and lots of birds. Next you create a real or imaginary circle 17 feet in diameter and sit inside the circle for 24 hours (or as long as your circle wants to), counting all the bird species you see or hear. That's it. Find a spot, sit in it, have fun.

THE BIG SIT! is like a Big Day, or a bird-a-thon in that the object is to tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard within 24 hours. The difference lies in the area limitation from which you can observe. THIS FREE EVENT is OPEN to every person and club in any country!

Visit the Bird big_sit_logo04.gifWatcher’s Digest website to see a video about the event and read more about it.

The Big Sit!-  the most sedentary event in birding. Don’t miss it!
