Hunting
The primary objective of the national wildlife refuge
is to provide habitat for the conservation of wildlife, native species
in particular. Carefully managed hunts maintain wildlife populations
at a level compatible with available habitat and provide recreational
opportunities.
Public hunting for deer, feral hogs,
dove and turkey will be allowed on several thousand acres of Balcones
Canyonlands NWR. Hunting on the refuge will be allowed only with a Balcones
Canyonlands NWR hunt special use permit and in accordance with refuge
hunting regulations.
The hunts are held on weekends in the
months of November, December and January. To obtain an application(s)
for hunts, send postcard with your name, address and the number of applications
you desire to: Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, 24518
FM 1431, Box 1, Marble Falls, TX 78654. Applications are normally sent
in late July. In September, the refuge conducts a drawing to determine
who will be allowed to hunt. For more information contact: Refuge Manager
