Our Children Are Our Future
Our children will be the future stewards of this land and much of the work of Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge revolves around environmental education.
So many children today do not know what is happening in their own backyards much less the wider world. Every year the Balcones Refuge introduces over 3000 children to the natural world.
4th and 5th graders from surrounding communities visit the Refuge to take part in the "Going Buggy" and "Bridges to Birding" programs. These programs have been written to mesh the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills science curriculum. Jennifer Brown, Environmental Specialist visits local areas to bring these programs to others who can't visit the Refuge. For home schooled students the programs are tailored to fit the age range.
The Refuge and the Friends of Balcones have partnered with the Candlelight Ranch to bring more urban and at-risk children to the Refuge. In the summer an intern is hired to help coordinate the program.
