The public areas of Balcones Refuge are open from sunrise to sunset 365 days per year. There is no admission fee. Balcones is a wildlife refuge created to protect two endangered species (the Golden-cheeked warbler and the Black-capped vireo) and as such certain areas may be temporarily closed during nesting season.
Balcones welcomes the public to visit and enjoy the open vistas of the Texas Hill Country, the sparkling streams, plethora of birds and fields of wildflowers.
There are many ways to enjoy a visit to the Refuge but you will have to get out of your car. The public areas are Warbler Vista, Doeskin Ranch and Shin Oak Deck.
