FRIENDS SUPPORT THE REFUGE
Our mission is to support, complete, and enhance the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
and its diverse ecology and promote its use for recreational, educational, and scientific purposes.
Keeping with our mission to support the Balcones Canyonlands in all ways possible the Friends work closely with the Refuge staff in a variety of ways.
Balcones Canyonlands contains some of the best habitat left in the Hill Country but the Friends would like to save more. We keep our Land Acquisition account in a money market to be used as needed. Because land in the area is now going for top dollar we use some of the funds to help landowners put their property into a Conservation Easement.
The Friends group organizes recreation activities monthly. These include bird watching, interpretive hikes, photography lessons, nature walks and more.
Todays' young people are the key to preserving the land and the wildlife found in the Texas Hill Country. Friends support the Environmental Education programs both monetarily and by volunteers. The "Going Buggy" and "Bridges to Birding" programs are held in the spring. Over 3200 students attend the programs.
The annual Christmas Bird Count has been sponsored by the Friends of Balcones for 12 years. The Friends have been active in collecting, growing and transplanting milkweed to conserve the Monarch population. Friends moneys have been used for interns to help with scientific projects.
If you love the Hill Country and want to preserve it, are looking for recreational opportunities, like to work with kids or want to meet like minded people join us.
