    Doeskin Bird Walk

Come out to bird on a crisp fall day at Doeskin Ranch, one of the prettiest and birdiest spots in Balcones National Wildlife Refuge!  We will explore a woodland area, a prairie area and a creekside area of Doeskin to see what birds are enjoying the fall day too.  You never know what you will find on any given day in this classic Hill Country terrain, but common resident birds include “Black-crested” Titmice, Bewick’s Wrens, Northern Cardinals, Rufous-crowned and Field Sparrows, with Turkey Vultures often flying overhead. People with all different levels of birding experience are welcome!

What to Bring: Wear a hat and comfortable hiking shoes, and bring water , snacks, and bug spray.

.Directions:  Doeskin Ranch is on RR 1174. If you are coming from the south, it is about 1.5 miles north of the intersection of RR 1174 and Cow Creek/County Road 328. If you are coming from the north, it is 2.3 miles south of the intersection of RR 1174 and RR 1869. It is on the east side of RR 1174. Phone based GPS will not work in the valley. A printable map is available here.

If Raining: If it is raining, the activity will be cancelled. Sadly, our feathered friends like to hide when it is raining.

    Christmas Bird Count

    Monday December 18th, 2017

Join us on Monday, December 18th, for the annual Balcones Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This count has enjoyed steady growth in participation over the past few years, and as a result our species total has continued to climb as well. We would love to continue this trend - more eyes in the field gives a better view of the birds life there.

The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running wildlife census in the world and provides critical data on bird population trends and movements. The Balcones CBC is sponsored by the Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR. The circle includes all the tracts of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge and the surrounding area (see the map on our website). We need many birders of all skill levels to adequately survey the birds in the circle area to find all of the expected species and the rare species visiting the area. We would especially like to have some feeder watchers this year, so if you live within the circle and have bird feeders, please participate.

Thank you for participating in this important citizen-science project!

For more information about CBC’s in general, see
Email with questions or to register. Exisitng team leaders and member should email us to confirm you are returning.

Not on an established Balcones CBC team yet? Please read the NEWCOMERS FAQ.
