Autumn Grass Walk
Autumn in the Hill Country is the best time to get outside and the best time to identify our native grasses. The easiest way to identify a grass is by the inflorescence or “flower”.
Doeskin Ranch, the largest public area at Balcones Canyonlands NWR, has the greatest variety of native grasses within easy walking distance.
Join Bill Reiner, biologist with Travis County , and Melanie Huff, Texas Master Naturalist, in exploring the beauty of autumn in the Hill County.
We will meet at “the circle” (where the restrooms are located) and hike the Pond & Prairie Trail and the Creek Trail with perhaps an offshoot up Rimrock.
Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, bug spray and maybe sunscreen and a hat. You may want to add a camera, field guide, binoculars and snacks.
Phone based GPS does not work in the valley. A printable map may be downloaded at https://www.friendsofbalcones.org/Maps.
