  • Guided hike on Doeskin Ranch

Connect with nature in a new way through our “Hiking the Artist Way” hike!

This will be a guided hike on the BCNWR Doeskin Ranch Trail, led by Holly Morris.

We will hike along this beautiful trail with an artist's eye, stopping along the way to observe what we see and to discuss landscape painting and nature art journaling concepts that will include the basics of composition, values, light and color.

This is for beginners as well as experienced artists.

Registered participants do not need to bring art supplies and will be provided with resource materials including a small journal to take home.  Artists may bring their own sketchbook and supplies if they wish.

Who is this hike for?

If you enjoy connecting with the natural world, this is the hike for you! Spend time with other creative nature appreciators, and be inspired by the beauty of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.

How difficult is this hike?

This hike will be a slow paced hike with frequent stops to appreciate and engage in various art discussions and exercises. The trails are eroded in places with loose rocks in some areas. There may be some moderate inclines or descents on various parts of the walk.

Hike Details

  • In order to map to the trailhead, you can use this link, or search "Doeskin Ranch Trailhead" in Google maps. To get to the trailhead, walk on the paved path into the refuge, and meet near the restrooms beneath the large oak tree (pin here for reference)

  • Cell phone service is very spotty at Doeskin Ranch, therefore, it is helpful to review your GPS map to the Trailhead prior to leaving your house in case your GPS drops. For a view of the trail maps, see this refuge brochure.

  • There are restrooms available at the trailhead only, these will be located very close to where you will start the hike.

  • Your guides will greet you at the trailhead closest to the restrooms, they will likely be holding a clipboard and checking people in as you arrive! They will be there about 15 minutes prior to the hike to start the check-in.

EQUIPMENT:As always, wear appropriate shoes, bring plenty of water, bug spray, and sunscreen.
