Position Overview
Join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a rewarding spring field season in the heart of Texas Hill Country! We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated individuals to assist with surveys for the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and the Black-capped Vireo on the beautiful Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.
As a Warbler Surveyor, you will work both independently and as part of a small, supportive field team to collect valuable data that supports bird conservation and habitat management efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct avian point-count surveys for Golden-cheeked Warblers and Black-capped Vireos.
- Navigate daily to multiple randomized survey points using GPS and maps.
- Record bird observations accurately and efficiently in the field.
- Hike across rugged terrain and dense vegetation in a variety of weather conditions.
- Contribute to data collection and management to support ongoing research and conservation goals.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Ability to identify birds by sight and song, particularly central Texas species.
- Experience with GPS navigation and/or GIS mapping software.
- Comfortable operating 4WD vehicles on rough terrain.
- Strong attention to detail and self-motivation while working independently.
- Enthusiasm for fieldwork, wildlife conservation, and spending extended periods outdoors.
